The Top 3 order switched around after the LJ with Ellis taking charge by 1737-1726-1605 over Snow (17’ 4”) and Merriott (16’ 2”) when she sailed 17” 6” for the event win. The leaders struggled in the DT but Ellis (370, 78’ 0”) survived the weak showing to lead 2107-1942-1932 over new 2nd place Kristen Celsor (Searcy) who tallied 550 on a 90’ 0” throw and Jessica Potter (Fayetteville) who scored 430 on a 82’ 0” toss. Megan Snow made a charge at the end of Day 1 with a strong 200m (26.89, 822) and Kanesha Hicks (Pine Bluff, 26.71, 858) joined the leader board as Ellis (27.04, 792) moved to a lead of 2889-2708-2682. The leader started strong on Day 2 with a win in the HJ for 825 points to move to a lead by 3724-3462-3263 over Celsor (5’ 2”, 790) and Potter (4’ 11”, 685) as Snow scored only 340 and Hicks could tally only 545. Once again the leaders struggled to score in the SP but Ellis added some margin to her lead with 544 points and Hicks made a late charge with 588 points to close out with only one event remaining with Ellis leading 4268-3890-3815 over Celsor and Hicks. The always tough 800m last event saw Ellis hang on with 640 points while Celsor and Hicks each scored 810 to end the event with Ellis on top by 4908-4700-4625 over Celsor and Hicks. Decathlon, Cabot High School, 5/28-29/08 … NEW 06/02/08 Rogers Boys put on display a key to their recent 7A track crown as the Mounties had two of the Top 5 decathletes in the annual combined events meet with 37 athletes participating. Michael Tibbs trailed by nearly 100 points after the first event but then went on to be the high scorer in four of the remaining events to rack up 8,065 points for the win. The competition started off with Stephen Houston (Little Rock Fair) running a nice 11.37 for 10mm and 889 points to lead over #2 Robert Rolfe (Fayetteville) at 868 (11.44) and Hunter Bourke (Fayetteville) at 841 (11.53). Tibbs then came alive for 950 points in the LJ with a solid leap of 21’ 1” but Rolfe scored 880 (20’ 6”) to move into the lead while Houston picked up 850 (20’ 3”). After two events the Top 3 were Rolfe (1748), Houston (1739) and Tibbs (1737). The SP saw Tibbs toss the steel ball 45’ 8” for 772 points while Houston could score only 526 and Rolfe only 475. Bourke moved up with 526 points and the leaders after three events were Tibbs (2509), Houston (2265) and Bourke (2237). Ethan Turpen (Lake Hamilton) sailed over 6’ 3” for 965 HJ points and move into contention. Rolfe jumped 6’ 1” (895) while Tibbs could only do 5’ 10” and Houston only 5’ 8”. After four events, Tibbs still held the lead at 3299 with Rolfe at 3118 and Turpen at 2995. Bourke then became only 1 of 2 competitors of the meet to score over 1000 with a fast 50.12 for 4mm to post 1019 points. Tibbs ran a respectable 53.17 (866) while Rolfe scored a solid 964 (51.22) and Turpen tallied 967 (51.15). The first day ended with Tibbs holding on to the top spot at 4165 with Rolfe close behind at 4082 and Turpen was 3rd at 3962. Bourke was hanging around the leaders at 3906 in 4th but Houston had dropped off the pace at 3544. Austin Young (Rogers) and David English (Ozark) slipped into 5th (3904) and 6th (3744) with steady performances as Young posted 998 in the 400m (50.54) and English scored 980 with a 50.90 in the 400m. Day 2 started off good for Rolfe who leaped 44’ 7” in the TJ for 1028 with the next best jump being English at a distant 41’ 9”. Rolfe’s jump pushed him inn to the lead after six events with 5110 as Tibbs hung onto 2nd at 5013 and Turpen clung to 3rd at 4814. English, Young and Bourke were still in range with 4600-4700. The DT and 100mh were friendly to Tibbs as he won both as he hurled the discus 127’ (770) and sped over the barriers in 15.23 for 927. After seven events, Tibbs was still on top at 6710 with Rolfe slipping further behind at 6411 and Turpen narrowly holding onto 3rd with 6194, just 32 points ahead of Young. Daniel Reese (Genoa Central) vaulted a nice 13’ 6” for 1000 points and Tibbs was close behind at 13’ 0” for 910. The other leaders struggled in the PV with only English exceeding 10’ with his 12’ effort for730 points. With one event to go, Tibbs had piled up 7620 points, well ahead of English in 2nd at 6654 and Rolfe in 3rd at 6601. Anyone who has ever competed in combined events knows that the 1600m to end the competition is more like a marathon. First, competitors are rarely true distance runners so the 1660m is a challenge plus they are tired from four tough events just prior to the run. Turpen won the last race in 4:52 for 879 good enough to move him up in the points tally. Rolfe, a sprinter and jumper, ran an impressive 4:54 for 858 points to secure his place. Tibbs posted his worst event score of only 445 with a 5:35 time. The final tally found Tibbs on top with 8065, Rolfe in 2nd at a distant 7459 and Turpen held onto 3rd at 7263. English finished 4th with 7245, Young in 5th at 6934 and Bourke 6th at 6650. Go here for complete meet results. Meet of Champions, Lake Hamilton High School, 5/21/08 …. NEW 06/01/08 The annual festival again showed the competitiveness of Arkansas track and field athletes irrespective of the school size. Class 6A Girls accounted for 8 of 17 event winners with the 6A-South providing 7 of 8. In the Boys events, 7 of 17 event winners came from Class 5A schools and Class 4A provided two. Stephanie Foreman (Lake Hamilton) vaulted a fantastic 13’ 6.25” for a new MOC and Overall state record. Foreman held the overall record set in the recent Class 6A State Meet at 13’ 0.25” and held the MOC record at 12’ 8” with Mallory Lawrence of Russsellville. Micah Washington (Ft Smith Southside) set a new MOC record in the TJ at 47’ 5.5” just short of the Overall state record held by Donavan Loring (LR Parkview/Central Arkansas) at 47’ 11”. Bentonville Girls took offense last year when Ft. Smith Northside took the 4 x 800m MOC and Overall record at 9:37.69 and the Lady Tigers brought the records back to Benton County with a fine 9:36.98 clocking. Near misses at records were Texarkana Girls in the 4 x 400m in a fast 3:57.19 (Conway holds at 3:55.64) and Torrium Cobb (Magnolia) cruised to the 100m win in 10.65 (Fred Rose, Texarkana holds record at 10.52). While not endangering the outstanding 1977 record in the 4 x 400m set by Forrest City at 3:14.04, the top six teams in the Boys race finished within 2.4 seconds with 5A Magnolia edging 7A Cabot by 3:24.35-3:24.68 in an exciting race. 7A State Outdoor, John McDonnell Track, Fayetteville, 5/15/08 …. NEW 05/31/08 Rogers ended a spectacular 2007-2008 season winning 5 of 6 CC/Track championships and becoming the first Class 7A triple crown winner as the Mounties pulled the hat trick as well as repeating as the 7A outdoor track champions. There had not been a triple crown winner since DeQueen won both Boys and Girls in Class 3A in the 2003-2004 season and there had not been a “large school” triple crown winner since Russellville Boys did so in Class 5A in the 2001-2002 season. Rogers Boys produced a surprisingly balanced scoring attack as 33 points came in the sprints and 52 in the field events to go along with the expected strong 59 distance points. The Mounties actually trailed 7A West rival Fayetteville by 88-86 with four running events to go but 31 points in the 800m and 3200m put the meet away and the 2nd place 4 x400m finish was icing on the cake. At the end, the Mounties pulled out a comfortable 125-99-85-65 win in the 14-team meet over the Purple Dogs, Conway and Ft Smith Southside. In the Girls meet, Bentonville was looking at an 81-68 deficit with four running events remaining when the Lady Tigers roared past the Fillies by 39-11 scoring well in each event. Kanesha Hicks (Pine Bluff) accounted for half of the Fillies scoring as she piled up 46 non-relay points including wins in the LJ (17’ 4.75”), 100mh (15.31) and 300mh (46.67). Al Keaton (LR Central) won the Boys meet high point award with 27 including the win in the 100mh. The Fayetteville duo of Hunter Bourke (24 points) and Robert Rolfe (22) were close behind. Micah Washington (FS Southside) won the TJ with a terrific leap of 46’ 11.75” and Jason Pelletier (Bryant) soared 16’ 0” in the PV for an outstanding mark. Cameron Efurd (Rogers) edged Caleb Hanson (FS Southside) by 4:19.83-4:20.66 in an exciting 1600m while Stephon Ferriel (Bentonville) posted a nice 1:56.81 for the 800m win. Aaron Hamilton (Rogers) won a down-to-the-wire 3200m by 9:35.75-9:36.48 over Marcus Pearson (Conway). In the Girls meet, Heather Estetter (FS Northside) easily won the 1600m in an impressive 5:08.21 while Katie Dalton (Bentonville) snuck past Sydney Foreman (Springdale Har-Ber) by 11:38.09-11:38.58 in the 3200m. Kayla Middlebrook (Bentonville) nipped Caron Van Hooks (North Little Rock) by 59.59-59.80 in the 400m. Go here for complete meet results. 6A State Outdoor, Lake Hamilton High School, 5/13/08 …..
